7 Tips on Deck Refinishing - Don't let invisible barriers prevent the adhesion of protective coating. Clean the deck thoroughly to remove embedded dirt, fungus stains and gray surface wood with a formulated deck cleaner and power washer.
- Always wear rubber gloves, goggles, and old clothes when working with deck chemicals and follow the directions carefully.
- Take advantage of the natural beauty of your deck-apply a clear or lightly stained finish. The best finishes are those that soak into the wood, not those that provide a surface film.
- If you do choose to paint, use a stain-blocking oil or alkyd primer first.
- There are three important characteristics to look for in a finish. First, the finish should be water repellent or waterproof, not just water-resistant. Second, it should offer UV (ultraviolet) protection. And third, if mildew is a potential problem, be sure that the finish contains a mildewcide.
- Wood preservatives should be reapplied once a year. However, newer preservative products may offer more UV protection and may last up to four years so check the labels.
- To keep your deck looking good for years ahead, rinse it off every 60 days or so to help remove dirt and grime which will better preserve the finish.
