Fall Wrap-up

  1. Check your vehicle's antifreeze rating, belts, hoses, tire pressure, tire condition, wiper blades and battery connections, etc. prior to the cold weather season. Plus, is it time for that oil change, grease job or tune up?

  2. Aerate your lawn and apply a good quality fall fertilizer, like Proven Brands. This is a good time to make note of problem areas that may need immediate attention or to be a part of planning for the upcoming year. If you were to only fertilize once a year, fall is the best time.

  3. Take a walk around the inside and outside of your home to inspect for areas that need re-caulking or insulating attention. Specific areas would be door sweeps, around the windows and doors, attics, outlets/switches and any openings to the exterior such as faucets or utility entrances.

  4. Before the cold arrives, take time to have your furnace checked by a professional for its safe operation. Change or clean your filter depending on the type you have. And, if you have a fireplace, this is the time to have the chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional. Do an overall cleaning of your ducts.

  5. Now that the gardening season has come to an end, finish planting those spring bulbs and clean the debris from your garden. Turn over the garden dirt with a spade rather than tilling it so that the freeze/thaw cycle works the dirt and pests have a more difficult time surviving the winter. Lastly, be sure to service and clean all of your power and hand equipment before storing them so they are ready for spring chores.

  6. Seal up all of your driveways and sidewalks to prevent the freeze/thaw cycle from enlarging those already existing cracks.

  7. Check the condition of the gutter system on your home. Clean out any debris, reseal any leaky areas and touch up any paint problems. Consider installing gutter guard to prevent debris from clogging your system after you have cleaned it.
