7 Holiday Safety Tips If you are going to put lights up around your house or on the trees, make sure to turn them off when you are not around. The last thing you want is a fire during the holiday season. Blow out unattended candles. Burning unattended candles can lead to a disastrous situation. When putting out presents and other things around the tree, make sure not to get them too close to space heaters. Space heaters get extremely hot and can set anything next to them a blaze if you are not careful. Make sure to check all cords, outlets, et before plugging anything in. A faulty component, could be the end of your tree and house. A good thing to have in your house, if you do not already have one, is at least one fire extinguisher, as a safety precaution. Make sure to consistently check your tree to make sure that it is not getting too dry. A dry tree is more susceptible to catch on fire than a moist one. Make sure to water your tree everyday to keep it moist. You should not use more than three sets of lights per extension cord, use only UL approved grounded extension cords.
