More Holiday Safety Tips Before placing holiday lights on your house or in trees, look up to locate any overhead power lines. It is important to keep all objects more than ten feet away. Do not hide electric cords under rugs or carpets, damaged cords can cause a fire. Make sure your smoke detectors have fresh batteries and that fire extinguishers are in prime working condition. Dispose of your tree when needles begin to fall off in large quantities. Keep your tree fresh by trimming the base. Artificial Holiday Trees - If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant. Use indoor lights inside and outdoor lights outside. Only decorate trees with nonflammable decorations. Keep popcorn, tinsel and any other flammable decoration, away from the lights. Never Put Wrapping Paper in a Fireplace - It can throw off dangerous sparks and produce a chemical buildup in the home that could cause an explosion.
